Beauty for Your Garden in the Winter

Most people think of winter and think of snow, ice, and dead brown gardens. However, you don’t have to have a winter garden that is dead and dry this winter. Believe it or not, there are a variety of winter garden flowers that will bloom in the winter to provide you with beauty, even in the winter. Although the approach of winter will be ending days in the pool and hot, sunny weather, there is no reason that winter has to bring an end to your garden. While your summer plants probably won’t last through the winter, there are a variety of flowers and plants for your garden that will look wonderful all through the winter.

Get Your Plot Ready
The first thing you need to do if you want to have beautiful flowers in your winter garden is to get the plot ready for the flowers and other winter plants. Try to find an area for the plot that will get a lot of sunshine, which usually will be facing the south. Also, keeping the plot near trees will help to shelter it as well, but you don’t want them to be totally blocked from the sun. Also, make sure that your plot has plenty of drainage as well, which can be done by adding sand or compost to the plot.

Picking the Right Flowers
While there really aren’t many plants and flowers that will survive an extremely harsh winter, there are plenty that will do well through a moderate winter. No doubt you are going to want to choose some beautiful winter garden flowers that will look great and last as long as possible through the winter. There are actually several plants that do well with little sunshine and temperatures that are cool, such as camellias and pansies. So, these are excellent choices to consider. Winter roses are also a great choice when it comes to flowers for your winter garden, they have beautiful flowers and foliage that is pretty as well. There are some rhododendrons that will bloom throughout the entire year as well, and you can find them in several beautiful shades, including orange, yellow, and even a lovely cream color.

Flowering Shrubs
Not only are there flowers to consider for your winter garden, but you may also want to consider using flowering shrubs in the winter garden as well for some beauty and color. Many of them have lovely foliage, beautiful flowers, and some even have brightly colored berries that look festive and beautiful. While not all shrubs have beautiful flowers to boast in the winter, some of them have beautiful stems that are colorful and pretty. Dogwood is one great choice, with stems that vary from corral to yellow. Also, Sibirica is another shrub that has stalks that are a pretty red for the winter months.

Planting Flowers in Your Winter Garden
Once you figure out what kinds of flowers you really want to use, then you are going to need to plant them. Planting flowers in a winter garden is going to be a bit different than planting them in a summer garden. The following are a few tips to remember when planting your winter flowers.

Tip #1 – Plenty of Space is Needed – When you are planting winter flowers, it is important that you leave plenty of space in between them. They need more space because there must be enough room for the air and water to circulate well; otherwise you may have mildew or fungus problems.

Tip #2 – Start Planting in the Fall – More than likely you are going to want to start planting your winter garden flowers in the fall of the year. This will give them plenty of time to get going before the snow sets in.

Tip #3 – Arrange Tall and Short Flowers – Remember that you want flowers facing the south, and if you have taller shrubs or flowers that you are going to plant, make sure that they are on the northern end of your plot and that the sorter flowers are on the southern end. This way the larger plants will not block the sun from the smaller ones.

Many people find that they actually enjoy taking the time to garden in the winter months. You don’t have to worry about bothersome bugs or heat that is simply unbearable. You will be able to enjoy the coolness of the outdoors having a great time in your garden.
