Garden Ponds
Tips to Remember When Designing and Building Garden Ponds
Garden ponds are an excellent addition to any garden or backyard, and while they can be quite a bit of work, they
definitely add beauty to any garden. When you add a pond to your garden you’ll have the advantage of watching beautiful
plants grow, smell sweet fragrances from the plants, and you’ll get to enjoy the wildlife in your garden as well. Add to
that the beauty and sound of the water and you are sure to be thrilled with your new pond. No matter what size or style of
pond you decide to choose for your garden, you are going to have to make sure that you build the pond correctly. The
following are several tips that you need to keep in mind when you are designing and building a pond for your garden.
Tip #1 – Start Planning First – The first thing you are going to need to do is to come up with a good plan. You
definitely don’t want to begin digging a pond if you have no plan. You are going to need to decide on what style of pond you
want and how big you want it to be as well. Also, it is usually a good idea to come up with a budget that you are willing to
spend too.
Tip #2 – Remember Safety – Safety is a very important thing to keep in mind when you are considering a pond for
your garden. More than likely you will want to be sure that the area where your pond is, is totally fenced in. The last
thing you want is for small children to decide to play in your pond and have an accident. You may also want to check with
the building department in your area to find out if you will need a permit or building the pond.
Tip #3 – Pick a Great Spot – You will also need to make sure that you pick out a great spot for your pond. When
choosing the spot for your garden pond, you will want to be sure that it is in a location that will drain well if there is
any water that spills over. Also, you’ll want to avoid having too many trees or shrubs nearby that will drop leaves into
your pond. While you’ll need to have some sunlight for your pond, you’ll have to remember that the sun can make algae grow
too.
Tip #4 – Choose a Good Liner – A good liner is also going to be important when you are building garden ponds.
You’ll need to be sure that the liner is flexible and made out of a durable material. The thicker the material for your
liner, the better it will be. Also, make sure that you purchase enough liner for your pond as well. When purchasing the
liner, be sure that you pick out liner that will harm your plants or any fish you want to have in your pond.
Tip #5 – Add a Waterfall – When you are building a designing a pond for your garden, you may want to consider
adding a waterfall to it. This will help you circulate the water in your pond to keep the water cleaner and you’ll also get
to enjoy the beauty of the waterfall as well. It will add an extra beautiful dimension to your pond.
Tip #6 – Purchase a Good Pump and Filter – Another important thing you will need for your pond is a good pump and
filter. The size of pump you are going to choose will depend on the size of your pond, and you’ll definitely need to
consider the height of the lift and the amount of water when picking your pump. Having a good pump and filter will help you
make sure that your pond is kept clean so your fish and plants will thrive.
Tip #7 – Choose Good Water Plants – Once you have your pond up and running, you are going to want to choose good
water plants to go in your pond. Consider adding some plants that are oxygenators, since they add oxygen to your pond. Also,
plants that have floating leaves are a great idea as well. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also will help keep
algae from growing too.
Tip #8 – Wait at Least a Week to Add Fish – It is important that you wait at least a week after putting the
plants in the pond to add the fish. This helps to make sure that the water finds a healthy balance before you add your fish.
Otherwise the water in the pond could actually kill all of your fish.
Keeping all these tips in mind can help you make sure that your garden ponds are properly and safely
installed. Then you’ll be able to enjoy the peace and beauty of having a lovely pond in your garden.
